5 Easy Summer Hairdos

August is the hottest month of the entire summer, and there is nothing worse than facing sweltering temps without a hot weather beauty regimen to rely on. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand the feeling of my hair being on my neck when the thermometer is climbing into three-digit territory. Instead, I like to keep my tresses off my neck, away from my face, and pulled back into an effortless ‘do. When the standard ponytail has worn out its welcome, there are a few other options to explore…

wrapped ponytail

wrapped ponytail.jpg

Put a fresh spin on your basic pony by wrapping a piece of hair around the base and holding it in place with a bobby pin. Give it that beachy summer touch by tousling it up a little bit.

messy bun

This hairstyle is the easiest way to get your hair off your face and neck, and it looks cute too. Gather your hair and twist it until it makes a donut shape. Fasten your hair tie around the outer edge, secure with bobby pins and pull out a few wispy pieces for an undone look.

topsy turvy

This simple trick looks like it takes a lot of effort, but you can do it in no time at all. First throw your hair into a loose low ponytail. Then spread the hair above your hair tie into two sections and loop the ponytail through it. Pull it all the way through and loosen up the twisted sides.

You might remember this hairstyle from our festival beauty hair ideas post. Just make two braids in your hair, wrap them around your head, and secure them to the top of your head with bobby pins. Click the photo for our step-by-step tutorial.

loose fishtail

This hairstyle is great for one of those straight-off-the-beach days when your hair is salty and windblown. The salt should even make it textured enough to hold without an elastic! Never tried a fishtail? Click the photo above for an easy tutorial.

10 Ways to Actually Stick to Your Healthy Eating New Year’s Resolution

So your New Year’s resolution is to eat healthier. Yay! But let’s be real, changing your eating habits can be difficult. But never fear because we are determined to help you make 2016 the year you stick to it! Here are 10 easy ways to follow through with your healthy eating resolution while also having a lot of fun along the way.

#1. Choose a method of eating healthy that is enjoyable, sustainable, and works with your lifestyle.

I can’t stress this enough: The reason why so many diets fail is because they aren’t enjoyable or sustainable. When we try quick fixes like restricting, juice cleanses, or eating cabbage soup all day, we just end up feeling hungry, tired, and deprived, which leads us back to the unhealthy habits we were trying to overcome in the first place. So how do we avoid this trap? Find a method of healthy eating that is sustainable and works for your lifestyle. For some people, this means following a framework like Paleo or clean eating. For others, it might mean skipping the diet label all together and just eating real food. There is no such thing as a magical one-size-fits-all diet and different methods work for different people. Just make sure that whatever approach you take is one you will actually enjoy and be able to maintain over time.

#2. Identify why and rise up to the challenge.

As I mentioned, changing eating habits can be really hard. Get over the hurdle by identifying why you feel the need to change your eating habits. Is it to have more energy? Clearer skin? More self-confidence? Whatever your reason may be, write it down and refer back to it when you feel like giving up. Accept the fact that yes, this is going to be a challenge. Commit to it wholeheartedly and remind yourself you are worth it.

#3. Educate yourself.

When we understand the way food impacts every aspect of our lives, it becomes a lot easier to make healthy choices. Check out books like Grain Brain and Salt Sugar Fat. Documentaries like Food Matters and GMO OMGare also a great way to learn.

#4. Meal Plan.

As the old saying goes, “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Meal planning is a great way to set yourself up for success. Set aside an hour or two of time every week to plan your meals, grocery shop, and do some basic food prep. When you invest time and money into this plan, you are much more likely to be successful and stick to it!

#5. Make enough at dinner so you have leftovers for lunch.

This one goes hand-in-hand with meal planning. When mapping out dinners for the week, plan to make recipes that will create leftovers for lunch the next day. This will save you time in the kitchen and help you stay on track the next day too!

#6. Get rid of the junk.

Make your environment work for you, not against you. This means getting rid of all the junk food in your house that will only tempt you and derail your good intentions. See no junk, eat no junk!

#7. Find healthy food you actually love.

Eating healthy does not mean eating salad all day. It should and can be delicious! Focus on healthy foods that you actually enjoy. Some of my favorites are avocado toast with a poached egg, brown rice tortilla pizzas, and chocolate banana ice cream.

#8. Discover healthy restaurant options.

Many eateries are starting to focus on healthy options. Hallelujah! If you love the experience of dining out, explore healthy options in your neighborhood like vegan or farm-to-table restaurants.

#9. Try batch cooking.

Part of staying on track is planning ahead for those days you know you will be ridiculously busy with no time to cook. Make up a specific food like chicken breasts or a recipe like soup at the start of the week and then divide it into portions so you have meals ready to grab-and-go when life gets busy.

#10. Get friends and family on board.

Eating healthy becomes a lot easier when you have the support of friends and family, so invite them to join you on this journey. Create a recipe share, have a crock pot party, take turns making meals for each other, and have weekly check-ins to hold each other accountable.

Are you planning on eating healthier this year? What strategies do you plan on using to help keep yourself on track?

10 Skincare Resolutions for 2016

With all of our efforts to be healthy for the new year, healthy skin is just as important. But rather than make one big commitment, there are a handful of smaller changes we can make throughout the year to maintain a healthy complexion. Just keep these 10 skincare resolutions in mind:

1. Change your pillowcases twice a week.

You’ve heard it before, but this is the year to really take that advice seriously. The amount of bacteria that can build up on your pillow cases is a recipe for breakouts, so commit to refreshing your pillowcases twice a week in 2016.

2. Wash your makeup brushes once a week.

Just as pillowcases can harvest bacteria, makeup brushes are a common source as well. Try making it a habit of cleaning your makeup brushes on a weekly basis this year and I promise you’ll see the difference in not only your complexion, but in the application of your makeup as well.

3. Never skip a wash before bed.

It can be tempting after a long day or a crazy night out to skip the soap and head straight to bed. So why not resolve to a nightly cleanse this year, no matter what the circumstances. We suggest keeping face wipes around for those nights where you just need a quick fix.

4. Drink more water.

This may be on your list of resolutions this year already, but drinking more water can make a huge impact on the health of your skin. Try carrying your own water bottle around so there’s no excuse not to hydrate.

5. Keep a consistent skincare routine.

With so many skincare products on the market, it can be tempting to forgo your routine in order to try something new. But dermatologists recommend maintaining a consistent skincare routine for at least three months before making any changes to truly see results.

6. Avoid products with harsh chemicals.

Harsh chemicals and fillers, typically found in drugstore cleansers, can strip the skin of its natural oils. Luckily, we’re seeing more and more all-natural skincare lines becoming available, as well as many DIY face masks using simple ingredients like honey and lemon. Not sure which products exactly to avoid? This list of 5 Ingredients You Don’t Want Near Your Face should help!

7. Take your vitamins.

Just as all-natural products offer healthy benefits to your skin, so do daily vitamins. Snag a bottle of gummy vitamins (yum!) and include them in your morning ritual. Your skin (and your body) will thank you!

8. Don’t pick at your blemishes.

We know it’s tempting, but we also know how damaging it can be to pick at your blemishes. Resist the urge this year and treat your acne right by cleansing the area and applying acne-fighting product daily. You’ll be surprised how much quicker your skin will clear up!

9. Let each product sink in before applying the next.

When you’re in a hurry, you may be layering on the products too quickly. It’s important to let your serum absorb into the skin, for example, before applying your moisturizer. So be sure to give yourself those extra 30 seconds to make sure each product does its job.

10. Don’t skip the moisturizer.

Even if your skin doesn’t feel dry, applying moisturizer after you cleanse is a must. Think of it like conditioning your hair. When you shampoo your hair, it feels clean but needs conditioner to make it soft and managable for the day; just as your skin needs moisturizer to balance out your cleanser.
