10 Ways to Actually Stick to Your Healthy Eating New Year’s Resolution

So your New Year’s resolution is to eat healthier. Yay! But let’s be real, changing your eating habits can be difficult. But never fear because we are determined to help you make 2016 the year you stick to it! Here are 10 easy ways to follow through with your healthy eating resolution while also having a lot of fun along the way.

#1. Choose a method of eating healthy that is enjoyable, sustainable, and works with your lifestyle.

I can’t stress this enough: The reason why so many diets fail is because they aren’t enjoyable or sustainable. When we try quick fixes like restricting, juice cleanses, or eating cabbage soup all day, we just end up feeling hungry, tired, and deprived, which leads us back to the unhealthy habits we were trying to overcome in the first place. So how do we avoid this trap? Find a method of healthy eating that is sustainable and works for your lifestyle. For some people, this means following a framework like Paleo or clean eating. For others, it might mean skipping the diet label all together and just eating real food. There is no such thing as a magical one-size-fits-all diet and different methods work for different people. Just make sure that whatever approach you take is one you will actually enjoy and be able to maintain over time.

#2. Identify why and rise up to the challenge.

As I mentioned, changing eating habits can be really hard. Get over the hurdle by identifying why you feel the need to change your eating habits. Is it to have more energy? Clearer skin? More self-confidence? Whatever your reason may be, write it down and refer back to it when you feel like giving up. Accept the fact that yes, this is going to be a challenge. Commit to it wholeheartedly and remind yourself you are worth it.

#3. Educate yourself.

When we understand the way food impacts every aspect of our lives, it becomes a lot easier to make healthy choices. Check out books like Grain Brain and Salt Sugar Fat. Documentaries like Food Matters and GMO OMGare also a great way to learn.

#4. Meal Plan.

As the old saying goes, “When you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Meal planning is a great way to set yourself up for success. Set aside an hour or two of time every week to plan your meals, grocery shop, and do some basic food prep. When you invest time and money into this plan, you are much more likely to be successful and stick to it!

#5. Make enough at dinner so you have leftovers for lunch.

This one goes hand-in-hand with meal planning. When mapping out dinners for the week, plan to make recipes that will create leftovers for lunch the next day. This will save you time in the kitchen and help you stay on track the next day too!

#6. Get rid of the junk.

Make your environment work for you, not against you. This means getting rid of all the junk food in your house that will only tempt you and derail your good intentions. See no junk, eat no junk!

#7. Find healthy food you actually love.

Eating healthy does not mean eating salad all day. It should and can be delicious! Focus on healthy foods that you actually enjoy. Some of my favorites are avocado toast with a poached egg, brown rice tortilla pizzas, and chocolate banana ice cream.

#8. Discover healthy restaurant options.

Many eateries are starting to focus on healthy options. Hallelujah! If you love the experience of dining out, explore healthy options in your neighborhood like vegan or farm-to-table restaurants.

#9. Try batch cooking.

Part of staying on track is planning ahead for those days you know you will be ridiculously busy with no time to cook. Make up a specific food like chicken breasts or a recipe like soup at the start of the week and then divide it into portions so you have meals ready to grab-and-go when life gets busy.

#10. Get friends and family on board.

Eating healthy becomes a lot easier when you have the support of friends and family, so invite them to join you on this journey. Create a recipe share, have a crock pot party, take turns making meals for each other, and have weekly check-ins to hold each other accountable.

Are you planning on eating healthier this year? What strategies do you plan on using to help keep yourself on track?

BEAUTY TIPS: 10 QUICK BEAUTY FIXES

Everyone of us had the situation when we were running late to the meeting, finishing final make touches and suddenly mascara smudged, or your blush landed on the wrong place just before you need to run out of the door…
In today’s article lets talk about 10 beauty tips and quick beauty fixes that you can use to rescue your beauty meltdowns:

1) If you’ve applied too much blush and you don’t have time to wash it off and do your makeup all over again, take a clean blush brush, deep it into your fixing (or translucent) powder and go over your cheeks till you tone down the bright color on your cheeks. If you used a cream blush, blend your moisturizer with foundation on the back of your hand and blend it lightly onto your cheeks, like this you will calm down the bright cheek color.

2) If you look in the mirror and notice that your foundation became cakey, try this: lightly spray your face with water and then smooth out everything with a damp sponge, blending very well all the edges.

3) To make your lipstick last longer, first line your lips with the lip pencil of the same color as your lipstick, then apply your lipstick and blot it down with paper and, finally, powder your lips. Repeat one more time all the steps and you will get “bullet proof” lip color that will last you through the 3 course dinner!

4) When your mascara smudged at the wrong moment (when you are in a hurry or late for the meeting) here is the fix: dip a flat q-tip into your moisturizer and gently remove the smudge off your face. Use the other side of the q-tip to smooth out the area.

5) Lip gloss is a wonderful beauty invention that can make your lips look juicy and very attractive! But lip glosses usually don’t have a long staying power. To prolong the juicy shine of your lip gloss on your lips try this: first apply a soft lip pencil of the same color as your lips, blend it well with your finger, and then only apply your lip gloss on top of it. The waxy texture of the lip pencil will help keep your lip gloss on your lips for longer. Who doesn’t love glossy and shiny lips?!

6) Your mascara got clumpy? No worries! Submerge your tightly closed tube of mascara into a glass of hot water (not boiling hot, just hot water) for couple of minutes. When you take it out (make sure you don’t burn your fingers!), you’ll see how your mascara softened and it won’t clump any more!

7) If your creamy eye shadow tends to crease, but you love it’s color and still want to use it, try this: after you’ve applied your cream eye shadow, lightly brush some translucent powder on top of it, it will help keep the shadow at place, working on the same principle of “fixer”, just as it does when you fix your foundation with translucent powder.

8) If your eyeliner tends to smudge (it especially concerns ladies with oily skin), try this tip: after you’ve applied your liquid or gel liner, go over it with a powder eye shadow of matching color (if you use black eyeliner – use black eye shadow). The eye shadow will seal the eyeliner, so that it will last longer without smudging.

9) Here is a great tip for a night out: if your lipstick looks flat and too matte, here is how you can “spice it up”: you can apply a lip gloss just at the center of your lips or you can apply a shimmery eye shadow at the center of your lips instead. Applying shiny eye shadow on top of your lipstick will make your lips look fuller and the powdery texture of an eye shadow will also significantly prolong the wear time.

10) If your lip gloss tends to slip off your lips in half an hour, try to mix your lip gloss with your lipstick on the back of your hand and then apply it on your lips using your finger or a lip brush, like this your lip color and shine will last longer.

The 7 Reasons You Should Go Get a Facial

There’s a wealth of information about skin care that’s readily available to us at the click of a mouse. That more than likely means your bathroom is already filled with products—peels, masks, scrubs, etc.—that can give you a serious deep clean. But while it’s great to practice good skin care, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should be skipping out on seeking professional help. And even though you may not suffer from severe acne or other chronic conditions, your complexion will still benefit from the attention of a trained esthetician.

“Getting a facial is important to understand how your skin works and how it reacts to stress, hormones, and the elements,” says Regine Berthelot, the treatment manager at Caudalie Spa in New York City. “People with problematic skin should book a monthly facial. At the least, getting one every season is recommended to keep the skin balanced.”

We asked our favorite experts exactly why we should all be booking an appointment (and fast). Here’s what we learned.

1. Facials can actually clear your pores. “A professional treatment will fully cleanse your skin in a way that you simply can’t at home,” insists Dr. Marko Lens, a dermatologist and founder of skin care brand Zelens. “Think about it this way,” offers Kate Somerville, founder of the eponymous beauty brand, “You brush and floss your teeth twice daily, but you still need to go to the dentist a few times a year for optimal health.” Facialists normally utilize a safe and gentle steam to really open your pores and allow them to breathe. It’s a don’t-try-this-at-home kind of cleansing.

2. If something’s wrong, you’ll find out why. “Your skin changes over time depending on age, weather, and even hormones,” Somerville explains. “It’s a good idea to have an expert who can help you address those changes, identify skin conditions, and educate you on how to treat them.” If you have great skin now, don’t trust that it will last forever! For example, lots of girls suffer from eczema in the winter and simply blame it on dryness. Not treating a serious condition can lead to long-term skin damage!

3. You’re popping your zits wrong. Don’t lie. We know you do it. (And we do, too.) But every time you squeeze a pimple, you’re risking acne scarring and dark marks. “Regular, professional extractions will help keep the skin clear,” Somerville insists. “It will also help prevent long-term damage you might be causing at home.” You may even find that booking a regular appointment will eliminate any reason to pick and pop yourself. “Facials are essential to prevent imperfections,” adds Dr. Lens.

4. It’s better than the beauty counter. You know when you go to a beauty store and someone tells you what to buy based on looking at your skin under fluorescent lighting? That’s not how we should be purchasing things. “A knowledgeable, licensed esthetician will provide personalized skin recommendations and a regimen that will address your individual concerns.” The best way to know your skin is to examine it, cleanse it, treat it, and then assess it. Once you’re on a great regimen, the esthetician will update it by season. It’s like having your own concierge!

5. There are some things you just can’t DIY. “You will never have the right products at home to get a professional effect,” insists Dr. Lens. (Take that steam machine as a prime example!) “We utilize light therapy, using blue and red LED, to eradicate the bacteria that cause inflammation during breakouts,” says Somerville. “It’s also been proven to reduce pore size, stabilize oil production, and promote healthy cell growth.” Unless you’ve got big bucks and the proper degree, you can’t get that kind of treatment at home!

6. You’ll find your happy place. “Facials are so much more relaxing than a DIY,” says Dr. Lens. In fact, Berthelot uses a mix of high frequency, massage, and hot towels to maximize the pampering experience! Everyone knows stress can cause skin issues, so a facial can cure any breakouts and give you reason to take a few deep, cleansing breaths.

7. Confidence is key. “I struggled with eczema for years,” says Somerville, “and I’ve seen every skin concern imaginable in my clinic. I know exactly what it’s like to regain skin health and feel confident. You should feel comfortable in your own skin!”
